baobab oil

BAOBAB – Digitata adansonia

The baobab, Digitata adansonia, belongs to its own family, Bombacaceae, and was named for the French naturalist, Michel Adanson, who spent a long time studying these amazing trees. With a life span of nearly 6000 years, huge size, and strange “upside down” aspect when devoid of foliage at certain times of the year, these trees have become a virtual icon of the African continent.

Huge fragrant flowers turn into a number of seeds per fruit, protected by a hard shell covered in soft hairs. The seeds are gathered by a network of rural women who have become empowered by the success of cold pressing this wonderful honey-coloured ‘fixed’ oil. As such therefore it can be applied directly to the skin surface in its pure form, with or without the addition of essential oils. Its wonderful skin properties are produced by a fabulous ratio of almost equal amounts of saturated (palmitic and stearic), mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated (oleic and linoleic) fatty acids.

Further to the above the oil contains vitamins A, D, E, and F as well as omega 3, 6, 9. The A and F are particularly beneficial in assisting the renewal and rejuvenation of skin cells. Baobab oil helps to improve skin elasticity and does not block the pores. In small amounts it makes a marvellous addition to creams, lotions, and body butters.
