cypress essential oil

  • Botanical (and family):
    Cupressus sempervirens.. Family Cupressaceae
  • Distribution:
    Grows wild in France, Italy, Spain, Corsica, Portugal and North Africa.
  • Description of plant:
    Tall, evergreen conical tree with brown-grey cones. Gave its name to the Mediterranean island where it used to be worshipped.
  • Extraction:
    Steam distillation of the leaves and twigs.
  • Charactersitics:
    A pale yellow mobile liquid of sweet-balsamic yet refreshing odour, reminiscent of pine needles.
  • Odour effects:
    Refreshing yet sedating.
  • Cautions:
    Regulates menstrual cycle. Best not to use in pregnancy.
  • Main chemical constituents:
    Alpha terpinyl acetate - 5%
    Cedrene and cadinene - 4%
    Manoyl oxide - 2%
    Alpha and Beta Pinene, Delta carene
  • Properties and indications:
    Calming i.e. in talkativeness. Soothes anger and removes psychic blocks.
    A 'reducing' oil. Useful in haemorrhages, nose-bleeds, sweating heavy menstruation, incontinence and cellulitis.
    Varicose conditions may benefit. Assists in menopause, and may regulate ovary dysfunction. Eases muscular cramps and rheumatism, and is an anti-spasmodic.
    Sweaty and oily skin would benefit. Helps mature skin due to fluid control.
  • Other uses:
    Colognes, after-shaves and perfumes.
  • Blends well with:
    Benzoin, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Juniperberry, Lavender, Lemon, Pine, Rosemary, Sandalwood.
